突然の質問です！皆さんは重森 三玲なる人物、御存知でしょうか？
革新的な作庭家で、伝統的な庭園史家。
代表的な作品に、東福寺の『市松の庭』があります。
この作品は桂離宮の松琴亭や笑意軒の市松模様に着想を得たと考えられています。三玲が目指した『永遠のモダン』のシンボル的作品とも言えます。
そしてこの御仁、『庭』だけでなく『いけばな』に対しても前衛的な姿勢で生涯取り組まれた方なのです。
それではその生涯を順を追ってご紹介していきたいと思います。
重森三玲は明治二九年、岡山県・吉川村の地主農家に生まれました。五人兄弟の一人息子で、両親に愛されて育ちました。父、元治郎は木彫りや建築などを嗜む趣味人であったと言われています。父の影響を受け、子供の時から文学や芸術を好み、やがて茶道といけばなを習います。早熟な三玲は一八歳の時、生家に茶室を設計、父が中心となって施工したそうです。
画家を志して東京へ
大正六年、画家を志し上京。日本美術学校で絵画と美術史を専攻しました。本科卒業後、研究科に在籍。同時に東洋大学にも通い、思想史や哲学、仏教史などを学んでいます。
当時、写実が基本の日本画の世界で三玲は抽象画を描いています。しかし、洋画の潮流に乗った新しい日本画の試みは画壇で理解されず、失敗に終わってしまします。三玲の興味は次第に日本の伝統文化全般の研究に向かっていきます。水墨画や能楽、茶の湯、いけばな、そして枯山水。
これらの芸術はなぜ日本で生まれ、どのように発展していったのか。終生に関わるこのテーマを、若き三玲は独学で追求していくこととなります。
関東大震災、そして帰郷
卒業後、三玲は美術評論で身を立てていきます。一方、日本文化を総合的に学べる学校の創設を同志と計画。『文化大学院』と名付けた通信講座を行いながら、本格的な設立を目指しましたが、大正一二年の関東大震災によって頓挫し岡山に帰京します。
郷里に戻った三玲は、農業に従事しながらも、哲学講座などを開催。生活基盤を持ち、改めて地元と対峙するなか、氏神の吉川八幡宮が優れた古建築であることに気づきます。そこで、社殿を文化財にすべく奔走。国と掛け合った結果、東京から建築史家の関野貞工学博士が調査に訪れます。
大正一四年一月、博士の訪問を機に生家の庭を作庭。この「おもてなしの庭」が処女作となりました。
＊同年四月、吉川八幡宮は特別保護建造物（現・重要文化財）に指定されます。
運命の地、京都
昭和四年、三玲は京都に移り住みます。当初は華道関係の仕事が多かったようですが、古美術写真の草分け的存在であり、庭園にも造詣が深い中野楚渓（なかの そけい）と知り合い、彼が主宰する「中野芸術院」で庭園講座を受け持つことになります。これを機に三玲の本格的な庭園研究が始まります。昭和七年、中野と三玲が中心になって、「京都林和泉協会」を設立、日本庭園の研究、普及を図ります。
昭和八年、『京都美術大観』の刊行を中野が企画、三玲は「庭園」の巻を担当し執筆しました。これが最初の庭の著書になります。
研究と創作の生涯
昭和一四年、いけばな研究会「白東社」を主催し、雑誌『いけばな芸術』を創刊。この刊行は五年余り続き、同時に前衛いけばな運動を展開していきます。
いけばなの定型化を危惧し、家元制度を批判、花のルネサンス（再生）を願います。「花のピカソ」と呼ばれた天才 勅使河原蒼風（草月流創流）ら華道家と交流し、「いけばなの革命児」中川幸夫を見出します。
三玲の創作意欲はますます旺盛で、作庭では高野山内に次々に庭を設計します。また昭和二八年には、大作である岸和田城「八陣の庭」も手掛けています。
同年、自邸に茶室「無字庵」を建立、翌年から初釜を開催しました。
最晩年、第二回実測調査を行い、並行して『日本庭園史大系』を刊行。作庭では石像寺「四神相応の庭」、豊国神社「秀石庭」などの意欲作を完成。昭和五十年の松尾大社庭園が絶作となります。
常に古典と前衛に向き合い、研究と創作を繰り返す、まさに全力疾走の人生であったのでしょう。
無心で巨石を組み、人と自然が空になることを念願した松尾大社「上古の庭」は、三玲の集大成であります。
そしてその願いこそが‘いけばな‘の目指す到達点でもあるのです。
